Pilot Episode: Pittock Mansion (Portland, OR)

Pittock Mansion (front approach)

I was in Portland this weekend and decided to take a trip to the Pittock Mansion to take in some local history.

Henry Pittock, longtime publisher of the Oregonian and an important figure in Portland’s early years, built this mansion in 1909 for his family on a hill overlooking the city. These days it’s part of the Portland Bureau of Parks and Recreation and is open to the public for tours.

The house was built with electric lighting and modern plumbing. I was struck two things on my visit. The first was the exquisite detail in everything – the exterior, the ceilings, the chandelier, the tiffany glaze, etc. The second was how surprisingly modern the house was, despite being 100 years old. It was built with electricity and fairly modern plumbing.
