Cabo da Roca is the westernmost point in continental Europe. It’s marked by a large monument, fields of wildflowers, and ocean that reaches unbroken to the horizon.
After spending the previous night in Sintra, I took a bus out to Cabo da Roca. It was very windy, and I lost the hood to my jacket! The area is not very developed; there’s only a lighthouse (originally built in 1772) and gift shop/restaurant. I stuck around for a light lunch a little geocaching before continuing on to Porto.
Less than 2km from Cabo da Roca is the beautiful and elusive Praia da Ursa. It can only be accessed by hiking down a steep dirt path in a cliff, but the views are well worth it. Regrettably, I couldn’t make the journey, but my friend Paolo went about a week before I did, and he took these amazing photographs that he kindly let me share here.
