{"id":120,"date":"2016-04-10T11:45:32","date_gmt":"2016-04-10T18:45:32","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/pxl8.es\/?p=120"},"modified":"2017-05-19T20:47:58","modified_gmt":"2017-05-20T03:47:58","slug":"spanish-language-school-week-one","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/pxl8.es\/index.php\/2016\/04\/10\/spanish-language-school-week-one\/","title":{"rendered":"Spanish Language School &#8211; Week One"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Three and a half weeks and only one blog post so far&#8230; Off to a slow start, but it should be a little easier to write from here on out!<\/p>\n<p>On Monday I started taking Spanish classes at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.delengua.es\" target=\"_blank\">Escuela Delengua<\/a> in <a href=\"http:\/\/granadatur.com\/en\/\" target=\"_blank\">Granada, Spain<\/a>. I have about 3 hours of instruction per day (broken up into two 1.5 hour segments) in a class of 8. So far I am really enjoying it!<\/p>\n<p>This week we covered<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>the word &#8220;vale&#8221; (means &#8216;okay&#8217; and can apparently be used <a href=\"http:\/\/spainkate.com\/common-slang-expressions-in-spain\/\" target=\"_blank\">just about every other word in a sentence<\/a>)<\/li>\n<li>conjugating present tense<\/li>\n<li>describing daily actions (My homework for day 2 was to write about a typical day for me at home, a typical day for me here in Granada, and a typical day for a 12 year old in the US. I&#8217;m pretty sure whatever I wrote for that last one bears no resemblance to reality.)<\/li>\n<li>frequencies<\/li>\n<li>relative locations<\/li>\n<li>occupations, typical actions for said occupations, and types of stores,<\/li>\n<li>construct for &#8216;near future&#8217; tense (aka &#8220;futuro pr\u00f3xima&#8221; or &#8220;going to do&#8221;)<\/li>\n<li>describing the weather<\/li>\n<li>tons and tons of new vocabulary<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>In addition to class, the school organizes daily activities around town and weekly longer trips. So, this week I went out for tapas with other students, visited the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.capillarealgranada.com\">Capilla Real<\/a> (for the second time), visited the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ticketmaster.es\/nav\/landings\/es\/mucho_mas\/entradas_alhambra\/entradas.html?utm_campaign=ALH-weboficial&amp;utm_source=alhambra-tickets.es&amp;utm_medium=link&amp;canalMB=ALH\">Alhambra<\/a> (also for the second time), watched the movie &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Ocho_apellidos_vascos\">Ocho Apellidos Vascos<\/a>&#8221; in Spanish with Spanish subtitles, had a day trip to Seville. Not bad for the first week&#8230;<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-125\" src=\"http:\/\/pxl8.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/IMG_1433-225x300.jpg\" alt=\"Court of the Myrtles (Nasrid Palace, Alhambra)\" width=\"225\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/pxl8.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/IMG_1433-225x300.jpg 225w, https:\/\/pxl8.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/IMG_1433-768x1024.jpg 768w, https:\/\/pxl8.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/IMG_1433-600x800.jpg 600w, https:\/\/pxl8.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/IMG_1433.jpg 960w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 225px) 100vw, 225px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>For these first two weeks here I&#8217;m staying with a host family. Although I had a lot of doubts initially about staying with a host family, it&#8217;s been both enjoyable and helpful. Reyes, my host mother, doesn&#8217;t speak English, so I&#8217;ve had no choice but to put my limited Spanish to the test! Despite the obstacles, we&#8217;ve been able to converse quite well and I&#8217;ve been able to see my progress as I learn a little bit more each day. In addition to being\u00a0a conversation partner, Reyes tells me a little bit about typical life in Granada.<\/p>\n<p>Our apartment is near the city center (and the school), but just far enough away that it&#8217;s no longer touristy. It has neither A\/C nor central heating. Each room has a little electric heater (<em>estufa<\/em>). The temperature here has been cool\u00a0so far\u00a0(mostly highs in the mid 60s), and this apartment stays much colder than outside. (On more than one occasion I&#8217;ve bundled up only to discover it&#8217;s warmer outside.)
